Adventure Sports

Canyoning
CanyoningCanyoning (known in the U.S. as canyoneering) is a sport popular in several countries. It involves travelling down creeks or streams within a canyon by a variety of means including walking, scrambling, climbing, abseiling, swimming and "li-loing" (using an inflatable air mattress). It requires skills in navigation, ropework, climbing, avoiding hypothermia etc.

Typically what separates a canyon from any ordinary stream is the narrow passage created by erosion into bedrock, creating beautiful sculptured walls and spectacular waterfalls.

Canyoning can be treacherous. There are risks associated with scrambling down uneven, slippery surfaces and abseiling in wet, cold conditions. Several fatalities have occurred in this sport as a result of flash flooding. the most infamous of which happened when a group of tourists on a commercial canyoning adventure trip were drowned in Switzerland in 1999.

Originally used primarily for transportation, skiing evolved into a popular recreational and competitive activity during the 20th century.

Snowboarding

Snowboarding is a boardsport on snow similar to skiing. Snowboarding is an increasingly common winter sport throughout the world where participants strap a composite board to their feet and slide down a snow-covered mountain. A snowboarder's equipment consists of: snowboard, boots, bindings and winter clothing. Snowboarding became a Winter Olympic Games medal eligible sport in 1998. Other events that focus on snowboarding are the annual U.S. Open Snowboarding Championship and the Winter X-Games. These events are hosted by varying winter resorts in the United States and Canada.

Snowmobiling

Snow mobileA snowmobile (or snow scooter, often referred to by enthusiasts as a 'sled' and in the Canadian north and Alaska as a 'snowmachine') is a land vehicle propelled by one or two rubber tracks, with skis for steering. They are designed to be operated on snow and ice, and require no road or trail. Most snowmobiles are typically powered by two-stroke gasoline/petrol internal combustion engines. Even though they are not designed for it, snowmobiles will skim on top of water if the speed is high enough, as demonstrated by the annual snowmobile river drag race in Kautokeino, Norway. Summertime occupations for snowmobile enthusiasts can involve drag racing on grass or even asphalt strips.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing has recently become very popular as a way of getting around on snow, even though it originated many centuries ago. Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area so that the person's foot doesn't sink completely into the snow, a quality called "flotation". Traditional snowshoes have a hardwood frame with rawhide lacings. Some modern snowshoes are similar, but most are made of light metal while others are a single piece of plastic attached to the foot to spread the weight. In addition to distributing the weight, snowshoes are generally raised at the toe for maneuverability.
While today they are mainly used for recreational purposes, primarily by hikers and runners who like to continue their hobby in wintertime, in the past they were essential tools for fur traders, trappers and anyone whose life or living depended on the ability to get around in areas of deep and frequent snowfall.
